Why your Grok Bot credits run out so fast (and 7 ways to stretch them)
"Usage runs out too quick" is the #1 complaint in Grok Bot + Opus threads. Here's why it happens and what you can do about it.
What people are reporting
Grok Bot is amazing. It is fast. But usage runs out too quick… $100 a month doesn't get you far enough. I don't have this problem (as much) using Opus 5.5.

(translated) Me: help me change one sentence. Claude: sure (quietly eats 190K tokens). Seven runs in one minute — the quota bar dropped faster than an altcoin. 📉 Really good, and really expensive.

Why it happens (likely causes)
- Expensive helper steps. When the router picks Opus-class models for sub-steps, each step costs more — and you can't force a cheaper model.
- Agent loops. Agents re-read files, retry and verify. A tiny request can trigger many calls (see the 7-runs-in-a-minute example above).
- Vague instructions. Open-ended tasks make the agent explore. Exploration is where tokens go.
These are our interpretation of user reports, not official explanations of how Grok Bot meters usage.
7 ways to stretch your usage
- Be specific up front. Name the file, the output format and "done" criteria so the bot doesn't explore.
- Batch small edits into one request instead of seven tiny ones.
- Offload heavy work to a harness you already pay for. One user has Grok Bot call the Grok CLI for heavier queries "to save on Grok Bot usage" (@MainStageNews); another has it run the Claude CLI and "defer to opus 5.5 for planning and design" (@Abomination81).
- Template once, mass-produce cheaply. Let the strong model make the first version, then have Grok Bot replicate it (@hx831126, translated).
- Check usage after big tasks so you learn which jobs are expensive.
- Use scheduled routines for repetitive work with tight instructions instead of re-explaining each time.
- Keep a reusable instructions file (bot template) so every run starts with the right context.
